Renewing a California Cosmetology License: BreEZe, Fees and Timing

California beauty licences renew every two years through the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology’s BreEZe online system. California requires no continuing education hours for renewal — you complete the renewal and pay the fee. Renewing on time is considerably cheaper and simpler than reinstating a lapsed licence.
Getting licensed is the hard part. Keeping the licence is administrative — but it is administrative in a way that catches people out, usually during a period when they are not actively working and stop paying attention to it.
The basics
- Renewal cycle: every two years.
- System: BreEZe, the California Department of Consumer Affairs online licensing platform.
- Continuing education: none required by California for beauty licence renewal.
- Fee: set by the Board and payable at renewal. Check the current amount on the Board’s website rather than relying on a figure you were told years ago.
That no-continuing-education point surprises people who have licences in other states or other professions. California simply does not require it for these licences.
How to renew
- Log in to BreEZe with your existing account, or create one linked to your licence number if this is your first online renewal.
- Locate your licence and select the renewal option.
- Confirm your details, particularly your mailing address — this is what the Board uses to reach you.
- Pay the fee.
- Keep the confirmation. Save it somewhere you will find it in two years.
What happens if it lapses
An expired licence is not a valid licence. Performing licensed services on an expired licence is unlicensed activity, and it carries penalties for you and potentially for the establishment employing you.
A licence that has expired can generally be renewed late with additional fees for a period. Beyond that period, the path back is longer and more procedural. The specific rules depend on how long it has been expired, so contact the Board directly rather than guessing.
The practical advice: renew even in a period when you are not working. The renewal fee is small compared with the cost and hassle of reinstatement, and an expired licence is a bad thing to discover the week a salon offers you a chair.
Keeping the licence itself
California requires licensees to display the licence at their work station or establishment. Keep it accessible and legible.
If it is lost or damaged, a duplicate can be requested through BreEZe. If your legal name changes, update it with the Board — a licence in a former name creates avoidable problems at inspection and with employers.
Working across state lines
A California licence is valid in California. Other states have their own requirements, and reciprocity varies considerably — some will accept a California licence with paperwork, others require additional hours or an examination.
If you are planning to move, check the destination state’s board requirements before you go, not after. Hour requirements differ substantially between states, and California’s post-SB 803 figures are lower than several others, which occasionally creates a gap to make up.
The habit worth building
Put your expiry date in a calendar with a reminder ninety days ahead, on the day you receive your licence. It takes thirty seconds and it prevents the single most common licensing problem working professionals have.
