Our student salon in South Gate offers haircuts, colour, manicures, pedicures and facials performed by students in training under direct instructor supervision, at prices well below a commercial salon. Appointments depend on which classes are on the clinic floor that week, so call (323) 587-1750 to check availability.
Every licensed cosmetologist, barber, esthetician and manicurist in California learned on real people. There is no other way to do it — the state requires supervised clinic hours precisely because mannequins do not have opinions, cowlicks or sensitive skin.
That is what a student salon is. Students perform services on members of the public while an instructor supervises, checks the work and steps in when needed. The client gets a service at a fraction of commercial pricing. The student gets the repetitions that turn training into competence.
It is a genuinely good deal on both sides, and it is one of the few things in this neighbourhood where "cheap" and "carefully supervised" are the same sentence.

What to know before you book
A student salon is not a discount version of a commercial salon — it is a different thing. Knowing that up front makes for a much better appointment.
- Allow more time than a commercial salon. A student works more slowly and the instructor checks the work at stages.
- Availability follows the class schedule, not a normal salon calendar. Call to find out what is running.
- The instructor has the final say on whether a requested service can safely be performed.
- Bring reference photos. Clear communication helps a student far more than it helps an experienced stylist.
- Some services need a patch or strand test first, especially colour and chemical work.
- If you need a guaranteed result on a deadline — a wedding tomorrow — a commercial salon is the right call.
Plan de Estudios
Services available on the clinic floor
- Haircuts and blow-dry
- Cutting and finishing for all lengths and textures, performed by cosmetology students under supervision.
- Hair colour
- Single-process colour, grey coverage, root retouch, highlights and toning. Colour services take longer and may require a strand test.
- Chemical texture services
- Perms and relaxing services where the instructor assesses the hair as suitable. Not every head of hair is a candidate and the instructor decides.
- Manicures and pedicures
- Classic manicures, gel polish, pedicures and callus care performed by nail students.
- Acrylic and gel enhancements
- Full sets, fills and nail art. Enhancement work takes noticeably longer with a student than in a nail salon.
- Facials and skin treatments
- Cleansing facials, exfoliation and masks by esthetics students, following a skin analysis.
- Waxing and brow shaping
- Brow, facial and body waxing under supervision, subject to contraindication screening.
- Makeup application
- Event and everyday makeup application by students, subject to class availability.

How a student salon appointment works
Call to check availability
Ring (323) 587-1750. Which services are available depends on which classes are on the clinic floor that day, so this call saves a wasted trip.
Arrive at the academy
8511 Long Beach Blvd, South Gate. Arrive on time — the clinic floor runs to a class schedule rather than a salon booking system.
Consultation
The student consults with you and an instructor reviews the plan before any work starts. This is where a chemical service gets approved or declined.
Service, with supervision
The student performs the service. The instructor checks the work at stages and steps in as needed. It takes longer than a commercial salon and that is by design.
Final check and finish
The instructor reviews the finished result before you leave the chair.
Why student salon prices are lower
You are being served by someone still in training, and it takes longer. The lower price reflects both the time you are giving up and the fact that a student is building skill on your appointment.
What you get in exchange is supervision that no commercial salon provides. A licensed instructor is watching the work and reviewing the result. For straightforward services — a cut, a manicure, a cleansing facial — a supervised student is a genuinely good value proposition.
Being a model is how the trade gets trained
California requires supervised clinic hours on live models for a reason. Real hair falls differently from mannequin hair. Real skin reacts. Real clients change their mind halfway through the consultation. None of that can be simulated.
Every stylist working on Tweedy Mile, every barber on Pacific Boulevard, every nail tech in Downey learned on somebody who sat in a student chair. Booking one is a small, practical way of keeping that pipeline open in your own neighbourhood.
Where the student salon is
The academy is at 8511 Long Beach Blvd in South Gate, on the corridor that runs from Florence Avenue down toward Lynwood and Long Beach. It is straightforward to reach from Huntington Park, Cudahy, Bell, Lynwood, Watts and Downey, and the Long Beach Blvd bus lines stop close by.
Directions are on our Google Business listing, and the contact page has a map. Call ahead — that is the one step that matters.

What affects student salon pricing
Prices are set well below commercial salon rates, and they vary by service. We do not publish a price list here because it would go out of date. Call (323) 587-1750 for current pricing.
Which service
A basic haircut and a full colour correction are not comparable services and are not priced alike.
Product used
Colour, lightener, acrylic and skincare product are real costs and are reflected in what a chemical service costs versus a dry service.
Hair length and density
Long, thick hair takes more product and more time on any colour or chemical service.
Time required
Enhancement and colour services take a student considerably longer than a licensed professional, and the clinic floor schedule reflects that.
Class availability
What is offered on a given day depends on which programs are on the clinic floor. Calling first is the only reliable way to know.
