Barbering and cosmetology both require 1,000 hours in California, which surprises people who assume barbering is the shorter road. They are equal in length and different in scope. Barbering is built around clipper work, fades, beard sculpting and the straight razor; cosmetology is built around chemical services and covers skin and nails as well.

Am I eligible to enrol?
This is the question that comes before every other question, and for a lot of people the answer is better than they expect. These are the rules the State of California sets for a barber licence.
- You need to have completed the 10th grade. California does not require a high school diploma or a GED to sit the licensing examination — tenth-grade completion is the state education minimum.
- You need to be 17 by the time you apply for the state examination. You may start school before your seventeenth birthday, as long as you reach 17 by the point you apply to sit the barbering examination.
- A Social Security Number is not required. California allows its professional licensing boards to accept an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number instead. Bring your ITIN and government-issued photo identification.
- Hours from another California school may count. If you started a program somewhere else and stopped, bring the documentation. Whether the hours transfer is a specific conversation rather than a general rule, so ask before you assume either way.
Two things worth being clear about. These are the *state* minimums — every school also sets its own admission policy, and some require a diploma or GED regardless of what the state asks for. What the 1,000 hours cover
- Clipper work and fading
- Guard progression, blending, bald and skin fades, taper control, clipper-over-comb, and lever work. Fading is the single most-judged skill in modern barbering and it takes the most repetitions to make consistent.
- Shear and razor cutting
- Scissor-over-comb, point cutting, texturising, and razor cutting for softness and movement on top. Shear work is what separates a barber who can only fade from one who can cut a full head.
- Straight-razor shaving
- Blade handling, stroke direction with and against the grain, hot-towel preparation, lathering, and the sanitation protocol that makes razor service legal and safe. This is the defining barbering skill and it is examined.
- Beard and moustache design
- Mapping the beard line to the face, cheek and neck lines, outlining, tapering and blending into the fade. Beard work is a significant revenue stream in this market.
- Hair and scalp science
- Growth patterns, cowlicks, density, texture types, scalp conditions, and hair loss patterns — knowing what a head of hair will and will not do before you pick up a clipper.
- Colour and chemical basics for barbers
- Grey blending, camouflage, basic colour application and the chemical texture services within a barber’s scope in California.
- Sanitation, disinfection and law
- Blade and implement disinfection, bloodborne pathogen protocol, station sanitation, and the California statutes governing barbering. The heaviest block on the written exam.

Barbering and cosmetology are both 1,000 hours — so what differs?
Senate Bill 803 set both licences at 1,000 hours effective January 1, 2022, having previously required 1,500 for barbering and 1,600 for cosmetology. Equal hours, different content.
Barbering concentrates on clipper work, fades, shear cutting, beard design and straight-razor shaving. Cosmetology concentrates on chemical services and colour, and extends into skin and nails. The straight razor sits only with barbering; nail and facial services sit only with cosmetology. Pick the licence that matches the services you intend to charge for, not the one that sounds broader.
Building a book in a Southeast LA barbershop
Barbershop clients in this area are weekly or fortnightly, not seasonal. That is the economic advantage of the trade: a stylist rebuilds a colour book every six to eight weeks, while a barber who holds fifty regulars has a predictable week for years.
The way that book gets built is unglamorous — showing up on the same days, cutting fast and clean, remembering names, and posting consistent fade photos. Barbers who work Saturdays and holidays in their first two years build books that barbers who do not, never catch.
Tools, and what is worth buying twice
Clippers, trimmers, a foil shaver, shears, a straight razor with disposable blades, combs, capes and a case. Cheap clippers cost you speed and cost you blend quality, and you will replace them within a year. Cheap shears go dull and you will feel it in your wrist.
The tool list is given to you in writing before you enrol so you can plan the spend rather than absorb it in one hit. If you already own tools, bring them and an instructor will tell you what is worth keeping.
