This is not a marketing line. Cutting curly and coily hair is a different discipline from cutting straight hair — dry cutting, curl-by-curl shaping, understanding shrinkage, and knowing that tension applied at the wrong moment produces a cut that reads correct wet and wrong dry.

The same applies to barbering. Fading across different densities and curl patterns requires different technique and, more importantly, different repetitions. East on Firestone Boulevard across Alameda to Long Beach Blvd, then south. Three miles and typically under ten minutes.

By transit, take the A Line one stop north to Firestone station and connect to a Long Beach Blvd bus, or take the Firestone bus east directly. This is one of the easiest car-free commutes in the service area.

The Watts Towers on East 107th Street are the neighbourhood’s landmark and one of the most significant works of folk art in the country. 103rd Street is the main commercial corridor, with the 103rd Street / Watts Towers A Line station on it.

Ted Watkins Memorial Park on Central Avenue anchors the western side. The neighbourhood spans 90002 and 90059 and borders Florence-Graham to the north, Willowbrook to the south and South Gate across Alameda to the east.

Transit provision is strong — the A Line runs through the neighbourhood with two stations, and bus service on Century, Imperial and Compton Avenue is frequent.

Watts has a community-rooted beauty trade, concentrated along 103rd Street and the surrounding residential blocks. Shops here are typically small, independent and long-established, and they hold their clients through relationships rather than location or price.

The population is now roughly evenly split between Black and Latino residents, which makes genuine technical range a working requirement rather than a specialisation. A stylist who can cut coily hair dry and curl by curl, and also handle straight and wavy textures, is serving the actual neighbourhood. So is a barber who can fade cleanly across very different densities and curl patterns. Training that skips either side of that produces graduates who can only serve half the people who walk in, which is a limitation you feel in your income every week. Strong transit access along the A Line also means graduates from Watts can reasonably take work across South LA, Compton and South Gate without a car.
